the corset that came back

for about two decades — roughly 1995 to 2015 — the corset was a costume reference, not a wardrobe reference. it lived in halloween shops and in marie antoinette movies. mainstream fashion treated it as historical, almost embarrassing.

something shifted around 2017. mugler under casey cadwallader started building corsetry directly into red carpet dresses. vivienne westwood's archive corsets started appearing on every editorial shoot. miu miu sent corseted minis down the runway for three seasons in a row. by 2024, sabrina carpenter was wearing a corset onstage every night of her short n' sweet tour.

the line did not come back as a costume. it came back as a wardrobe. the women who reach for it now are not playing dress-up — they are choosing the silhouette because it is the one they want their bodies to read in. they are at galas, at dinners, on stages, on red carpets. they are choosing to be in their bodies the way the women of the 1950s were.

the kardashians made it visible. the runways made it desirable. the contemporary corset is no longer a reference. it is a fact.

we built the first edition as one answer — the corselet sewn into the silk, the structure invisible, the dress a woman puts on once and then forgets. the second edition, the one on our table now, goes further back to go further forward. more on that soon.
