sophia, between takes

sophia, between takes

sophia loren was photographed in dresses for most of her working life. between takes, between trains, between hotels and sets, the cameras were always there. what is striking, looking through the archive now, is how often she is doing something else in the photographs — talking, eating, reading, holding a cigarette — and how often the dress is doing its own work in the background.

she was not a uniform. she wore many different houses, many different cuts. but the line is consistent. the waist is held. the hip is honored. the architecture is there.

what we take from her is not a particular silhouette. what we take is the relationship between the woman and the dress. she trusted the garment to do its job. she was free to be a person inside it.

the dress and the woman are not the same thing. they are collaborating. that is the standard we are after.
