what “30-momme” actually means

what “30-momme” actually means

momme is the unit of measure for silk weight. one momme is approximately 4.34 grams per square meter. most contemporary silk dresses are made at 12 to 16 momme — light, fluid, easy to source, easy to sew.

the silk in the first edition is 30 momme. it is approximately twice as heavy as a typical silk dress fabric. heavy enough that the fabric falls in serious folds rather than fluttering. heavy enough that the drape feels like water poured slowly, not water flicked.

the trade-off is real. 30-momme charmeuse is harder to source, more expensive per yard, and more difficult to sew. it does not forgive a tentative seam. it requires a hand that knows it. we work with a single mill that has been weaving this weight for decades.

we chose 30 momme for the first edition because the silhouette we wanted required gravity. a lighter silk would have floated where we wanted it to fall. a heavier silk would have stiffened where we wanted it to drape. 30 was the answer.

future drops may use different silks, different weaves, eventually different fibers altogether. the principle stays the same. the material should serve the line. when it doesn't, we change the material.
