on making the corset invisible

the structure has to disappear.

if you can see it through the dress — a ridge of boning, the edge of a panel, the line of the lacing — the illusion breaks. the wearer reads as a woman in a corset, not a woman in a dress. that is the failure state. we have failed at it many times.

the first edition uses a chassis attached to the outer silk at carefully chosen points, but it is its own structure underneath. this approach works, but the wearer can sometimes feel the two layers as separate. the silk is silk. the chassis is engineering.

the next edition will pursue a more integrated construction. the structure and the outer will be drafted as one piece, woven and bonded together, so the dress feels — to the wearer and the eye — like a single garment with structure simply built in. this is the next chapter we are working on.

the goal is the same. the chassis must vanish. the silhouette must remain.
